HERAT, Afghanistan, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Three Afghan border police personnel, including a policewoman, were shot dead along a road in the western Afghan province of Herat on Monday, a provincial government spokesman said.

"The shooting took place in Ahmad Abad locality outside Herat city after armed men laid an ambush along Herat-Islam Qala road early this morning," spokesman Jilani Farhad told Xinhua.

"The assailants singled out the police officers from a running vehicle and shot them on the side of the road," he said.

The victims were travelling to office in the town of Islam Qala near the border with Iran.

No group has claimed the attack, but the spokesman pointed fingers at Taliban militants.

The Taliban militants have been rampant since late April when they launched a so-called annual rebel offensive in different places in Afghanistan, including the capital of Kabul, killing and injuring hundreds of people.
