MANILA, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The Ombudsman of the Philippines has ordered the filing of criminal charges against former President Benigno Aquino "for his liability in the so-called Mamasapano massacre" that resulted in the death of 44 police commandos in 2015, the ombudsman office said in a statement on Friday.

In a resolution approved on Friday, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales ordered the filing of charges against Aquino for usurpation of authority and violation of the anti-graft and corrupt practices act.

The ombudsman also ordered criminal charges against Aquino's co-conspirators - former Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Alan Purisima and PNP Director Getulio Napenas of the PNP Special Action Force (SAF).

The Ombudsman of the Philippines is responsible for investigating and prosecuting Philippine government officials accused of crimes, especially graft and corruption.

A spokesman for Aquino said the former president would appeal the Ombudsman order.
