ISLAMABAD, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Pakistan's southern Sindh province Wednesday decided to extend special powers for three months to the paramilitary troops to allow them to arrest and question criminals and terror suspects, officials said.

Paramilitary force Rangers have been deployed in Karachi, the capital of Sindh, to maintain peace and carry out action against armed groups, sectarian outfits and criminal gangs.

Terrorist activities and street crimes particularly kidnappings for ransom had increased in Karachi, the commercial hub of the country. The crimes have affected business and normal life in the city of nearly 20 million people.

Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah has extended special policing powers granted to the paramilitary Rangers for 90 days within Karachi, his spokesperson said.

The Pakistan Rangers in Sindh will now be able to exercise their special powers from July 15 to Oct. 12, he told the media.
