DUBAI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Dubai said Tuesday that the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) has elected Abdullah Al-Shaibani, Secretary General of the Executive Council of Dubai, as Vice Chair of the C40's Steering Committee.

The C40 group connects more than 90 of the world's greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. Dubai joined the group in 2015.

"The election of Al-Shaibani acknowledges the work the emirate has carried out in recent years, as it seeks to create a resilient, sustainable and low carbon environment," Dubai government said a statement.

The newly-elected Al-Shaibani and the city of Dubai will now represent the South and West Asia regions in the group.

"As a new member of the Steering Committee, the Executive Council of Dubai will strive to contribute to the C40 group and the world's transition to a low carbon economy," said Al-Shaibani.

According to the C40, by 2050, more than one billion people will live in cities that are highly vulnerable to climate-related flooding and extreme weather. It estimates that there will be between 80 to 200 million climate refugees worldwide by the time.
