NEW DELHI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people have drowned after a boat capsized near a dam in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, a senior police official said Monday.

"The incident took place late Sunday evening when the boat carrying some 12 people capsized in Vena dam in the state's Nagpur town," he said on condition of anonymity.

While five people have been rescued, others drowned, the official said, adding that the bodies of the victims have been fished out of the waters by police.

"The bodies have been handed over to the family members after an autopsy," he said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident to ascertain how the boat capsized, the official said. "Eye-witnesses told us that it could be due to overloading," he said.

This is the second boat tragedy this year.

In April, at least 13 people drowned after a boat capsized in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district.
