MADRID, July 8 (Xinhua) -- A 57-year-old man was drowned in a flooded tunnel due to heavy rainstorm in the Spanish capital of Madrid, rescue services confirmed Saturday.

The rescue services received a call reporting a vehicle driving into a flooded underground tunnel shortly after 3:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) on Saturday morning.

They dispatched rescue teams and discovered the man's body with his car trapped in the tunnel filled with floodwater of 3-meter in depth in the Colsada region.

The tunnel was flooded on Friday afternoon as a result of the storm that had battered the capital for two and a half hours , according to the police.

The barriers were placed across the access ramp in order to prevent anyone driving in. Police are now investigating whether someone or the victim himself had removed the barriers and entered the tunnel.

Friday's storm brought around 45 liters of rainfall per square meter in a short period of time, greatly affecting the city's airport, train, subway and hospitals.
