LONDON, July 7 (Xinhua) -- It was quite a teddy bear's picnic at Britain's Chester Zoo when their rare baby Andean bear cub attempted its first-ever tree climbing adventure.
The thrill-seeking cub got a little bit stuck to begin with but mom, Lima, was on hand to help her inquisitive offspring.
The zoo's mammals curator Tim Rowlands said: "Mom Lima really has her paws full with her excitable new cub. It's gaining more and more confidence with every passing day and is wasting little time getting to know its surroundings, including some of the very tallest trees."
"Andean bear cubs learn very quickly though and we're sure it won't be long until this adventurous newcomer completely develops its head for dizzying heights," he added.
With the survival of the species in the wild under threat, staff at Chester Zoo hailed the arrival of their new cub as "hugely significant." The cub has yet to be named as until now the zoo keepers have been unable say whether it is male or female.
Conservationists from Chester are working to protect wild Andean bears, listed as vulnerable to extinction in Bolivia.
Also known as "spectacled bears," the species was made famous by the famous fictional character Paddington Bear. His fictional bear became one of the country's most adored characters in children's books.
