HAMBURG, Germany, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Germany's second largest city Hamburg, officially named Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, will hold the Group of 20 summit from Friday to Saturday.

Here is some basic information about Hamburg.

As one of the 16 German states, the harbor city is located between Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein in north Germany. The Elbe river flows through the city and then into the North Sea.

It possesses an area of around 755 square kilometers and a population of about 1.8 million people, and is in the lead in terms of Gross Domestic Product per capita in Germany.

The Port of Hamburg in the heart of the city is one of the country's biggest and busiest ports. With a long history of trade with the rest of the world, now the city has evolved into a European traffic hub with its developed airport and railway system.

Due to its advanced technology, manufacturing, logistics industries and international trade, Hamburg has attracted a large number of immigrants and foreign investments over the past decades.

Hamburg is also a famous travel destination with its rich history and culture. Over 6 million tourists visit the city every year. The Elbphilharmonie concert hall completed in 2016 is a new landmark of the city.

As an international city, Hamburg has been the sister city of China's east coastal city of Shanghai since 1986.
