Sri Lanka to construct 100 relief centers for disaster situations

COLOMBO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan cabinet agreed on Wednesday to construct 100 relief centers across the country that can facilitate people affected during future disasters.

Cabinet Spokesperson Rajitha Senaratne told a media briefing here that currently schools and religious places of worship were mainly used as shelters during disaster situations.

The use of school buildings had seriously affected educational activities of children and such centers did not have ample facilities to be operated as relief centers, Senaratne added.

Accordingly, following a proposal made by Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Minister of Disaster Management, the cabinet has decided to construct 100 centers that can facilitate 100 to 200 people each covering all the 25 districts within the period of 2018 to 2020, and to prepare a method to utilize these buildings and resources in a fruitful manner in times when they are not used as relief centers, Senaratne said.
