CAIRO, July 4 (Xinhua) -- At least two policemen were killed and ten others were wounded on Tuesday in an explosion in the Egyptian province of North Sinai, an official security source said.

"A police armored vehicle carrying the policemen were exploded after passing on planted explosive devices in Dafa region, southern Al-Arish city," the source told Xinhua.

The security forces are combing the area in search for the perpetrators, he added.

North Sinai is the main base for Islamic State branch in Egypt, which has been very active there, following the army-led ouster of the Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, in response to mass protests against his rule.

The IS affiliate in Sinai claimed responsibility for most of the anti-security operations that killed hundreds of police and army men across the country.

Meanwhile, the armed forces in coordination with the police launched a wide-scale operation to uproot the terrorist cells in Sinai Peninsula, North Sinai in particular.
