KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Up to 20 Taliban militants were killed and 17 others injured over the past 24 hours as the Afghan security forces fought to ensure the security of roads leading to the northern Kunduz city, police spokesman Mahfozullah Akbari said Tuesday.

According to Akbari, Taliban insurgents had been wiped out from several villages in Angor Bagh locality and Ali Abad district and road connecting Kunduz to the neighboring Baghlan province had been reopened.

He also noted that the security forces would continue the operation until peace and security return to the area.

Taliban militants who twice captured Kunduz provincial capital, the Kunduz city, 250 km north of Kabul over the past two years have been attempting to overrun it again this year.
