WASHINGTON, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The man who inspired people worldwide to dump buckets of ice water over their heads to raise funds for a disease that causes muscles to decrease in size is back in the hospital, reports said Monday.
Pete Frates, 32, posted Monday via his Twitter account a 45-second video showing him lying in a hospital bed while the song "Alive" by Pearl Jam plays in the background, after some news outlets reported he had died.
The former Boston College baseball player was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2012. The disease weakens muscles and impairs physical functioning, There is no known cure.
Frates' family said Sunday he had returned to the hospital and was "battling this beast ALS like a superhero," said an AP report.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has so far raised more than 220 million U.S. dollars around the world to fight the disease since it took off on social media in 2014, according to the website of ALS Association.
