TEHRAN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry on Thursday dismissed as "baseless" and "unfounded" the charges against Tehran by a recent U.S. report on human trafficking.

"Washington's interventionist and warmongering policies are the root cause of human trafficking across the world," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi was quoted by the Tasnim news agency as saying.

Qasemi was responding to the annual report on global human trafficking released on Tuesday by U.S. State Department.

The report claims that Iranian government "does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so."

The United States lacks the "required qualifications and legitimacy" to issue such a report about other countries, Qasemi said.

He added that such "biased" reports are prepared based on the U.S. double-standard policies and merely meant to distort the image of the Islamic Republic.
