NEW DELHI, June 29 (Xinhua) -- India's vice presidential elections will he held on Aug. 5, the country's independent Election Commission announced Thursday.
Incumbent Vice President Hamid Ansari's five-year term expires on Aug. 10.
"The vice presidential election will be held on August 5 and the results will be declared the same day," India's Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi told the media in the national capital.
"The poll will be notified on July 4, with July 18 being the last date for filing nominations. The last day for withdrawal of nomination is July 21," he added.
The vice president is elected indirectly by an electoral college comprising members of both houses of the Indian Parliament and the elections are held through secret ballots.
The vice president acts as the Indian president in the latter's absence due to death, resignation, impeachment or other situations.
The vice president of India is also the ex-officio chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament.
