DUBAI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) on Wednesday urged residents to limit use of electrical appliances during peak-load hours from 12:00 to 18:00 local time every day in summer, United Arab Emirates (UAE) state news agency WAM reported.

The appeal comes as part of DEWA's annual campaign dubbed "Let's Make This Summer Green," which aims to enhance awareness about the importance of adopting sustainable practices, said the report.

The campaign also aims to encourage rational consumption by the public, preserve natural resources and reduce Dubai's carbon footprint.

Tips are promoted to reduce energy consumption during the summer, when energy demand is higher, especially during peak-load hours, which results in increased energy generation and more fuel cost, according to the report.

With outdoor temperature exceeding 45 degrees Celsius around noon and humidity over 90 percent in the sheikhdom, water and electricity consumption rise in Dubai with 2.8 million inhabitants during the ultra-hot summer months.

"DEWA attaches great importance to the rational use of energy in its efforts to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, to establish a sustainable model of energy conservation that can be exported to the whole world," said Saeed Mohammed Al-Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA.

The objective of DEWA is to turn the city into one "with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050," he said. "These efforts also support the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy to reduce energy demand by 30 percent by 2030."

According to DEWA, its customers had saved over 1.54 terawatt-hours of electricity and 6.2 billion gallons of water between 2009 and 2016, worth over 957 million dirham (about 260.76 million U.S. dollars), offsetting around 831,000 tons of carbon emissions.
