BRUSSELS, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Croatia on Tuesday is connected to the Schengen information system, the information sharing system for security and border management, the European Union (EU) said in a statement.
The Schengen information system is in operation in Schengen area, which encompasses most EU members, except for Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and Britain.
Croatia will now be able to exchange information with other EU member states through the system on persons wanted in relation to terrorism and other serious crimes, according to the statement.
Croatia's integration into the system will also help reduce border checks at land borders between Croatia and Slovenia.
The European Commission had proposed the gradual integration of Croatia into the Schengen information system in January in a bid to improve the accessibility of the system.
