NEW DELHI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Heavy overnight monsoon rains brought India's financial capital Mumbai to a grinding halt Tuesday.
Waterlogging has been reported from large parts of the city and its adjoining areas, including Hindmata area in suburban Dadar, Sion, Matunga, and some parts in Andheri, resulting in disruption of rail and road traffic since Tuesday morning.
Local passenger trains are running at least 20 minutes late, while several commuters are stranded on Harbour and Central lines.
Local TV channels showed footage of vehicle and people wading through inundated road in various parts of the city and reported that incessant rains uprooted trees at over 20 places though there has been no loss of lives.
Civic officials have warned of flash floods in low-lying areas of the city as a high tide is expected Tuesday afternoon.
"The disaster management team is keeping a tab on the situation," Mumbai's Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sudhir Naik told the media.
The weather department has also warned of heavy rains in the next 48 hours.
"More showers are expected in the next two days. However, the weather is likely to become better during the weekend," said a senior official of the Indian Meterological Department.
The annual monsoon often causes a complete breakdown of infrastructure and transport services in Mumbai.
