BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower Thursday as market sentiment remained weak.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.28 percent to close at 3,147.45 points. The smaller Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.98 percent lower at 10,265.2 points.

Total turnover in the two indices expanded to 496 billion yuan (72.6 billion U.S. dollars) from 392 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

TOKYO -- Tokyo stocks closed marginally lower Thursday as U.S. equities dropping overnight on falling prices for crude oil saw energy stocks here retreat amid a circumspect market mood.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 28.28 points, or 0.14 percent, from Wednesday to end the day at 20,110.51.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.18 points, or 0.07 percent, to close at 1,610.38.

Trading volume on the main section on Thursday came to 1,550.40 million shares, declining from Wednesday's volume of 1,634.36 million shares.

The turnover on the penultimate trading day of the week totaled 2,077.1 billion yen (18.70 billion U.S. dollars).

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks finished higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) up 13.78 points, or 0.43 percent, to close at 3,215.55.

A total of 2.09 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.04 billion Singapore dollars (about 749.86 million U.S. dollars). Gainers are equal to losers at 218.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 20.05 points, or 0.08 percent, to 25,674.53 points on Thursday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,597.46 and 25,867.94. Turnover totaled 78.05 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 10.01 billion U.S. dollars).

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index Thursday moved down 3.90 points, or 0.25 percent, to close at 1,580.91 points.

Some 8.76 billion shares worth 38.76 billion baht (about 1.14 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed flat Thursday. Equity benchmarks erased gains in last hour of trade.

The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed at 31,290.74, 7.10 points or 0.02 percent up compared to its previous close at 31,283.64.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended higher here on Thursday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,777.43 up 1.86 points or 0.10 percent, and the Emas was at 12,631.51 up 15.75 points or 0.12 percent.

Turnover declined to 1.64 billion shares valued at 1.80 billion ringgit Malaysia(419.83 million U.S. dollars), compared with 1.69 billion shares valued at 2.41 billion ringgit Malaysia(561.77 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's DSE (Dhaka Stock Exchange) Broad Index closed Thursday at 5,599 points, up 31.38 points from Tuesday's finish.

Total turnover increased to about 7.44 billion taka (about 91.86 million U.S. dollars) on Thursday from about 7 billion taka (about 86.47 million U.S. dollars) on Wednesday.

MANILA -- The Philippine stock market slumped for the third straight session on Thursday as the US and Europe markets fell overnight.

The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index went down by 0.36 percent or 28.03 points to 7858.34, while the broader all-share index slipped by 0.20 percent or 9.27 points to 4699.52.

Trading volume reached 2.89 billion shares worth 8.68 billion Philippine pesos (172.77 million U.S. dollars) with 102 stocks declining, 98 advancing, and 47 unchanged.

HANOI -- Stock market index of Vietnam's capital Hanoi, HNX-Index, closed at 98.61 points on Thursday, down 0.07 points or 0.07 percent against the previous trading session.

Over 53.277 million shares worth some 648.347 billion Vietnamese dong (some 28.9 million U.S. dollars) were traded at the Hanoi Stock Exchange on Thursday, a decrease of 34.62 percent in volume and 29.4 percent in value against the previous trading session.

HO CHI MINH CITY -- VN-Index, the stock market index of Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City bourse in southern Vietnam, closed at 766.3 points on Thursday, down 1.11 points, or 0.14 percent, against the previous trading day's closing session.

About 224.839 million shares worth 4.509 trillion Vietnamese dong (VND) (201.03 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the southern HCM City Stock Exchange.

VN30-Index, the new benchmark index for the southern bourse, which tracks the 30 leading stocks by both market capitalization and liquidity, closed at 757.94 points, down 1.9 points, or 0.25 percent.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Thursday down 0.07 percent compared to the previous trading day.

SYDNEY -- The Australian market rebounded on Thursday, after big losses on Wednesday resulted in the worst trading session of 2017 so far.
