DHAKA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Remittances from millions of non-resident Bangladeshis in July-May period of the current fiscal year 2016-17 ending this month totaled 11.55 billion U.S. dollars, a central bank official said Thursday.

Quoting provisional Bangladesh Bank (BB) data, the official who asked not to be named told Xinhua that "Expatriate Bangladeshis remitted home 11.55 billion U.S. dollars in July-May, nearly 14.19 percent lower than the same period a year ago."

The BB official, however, said Bangladeshis in May remitted home 1.27 billion U. S. dollars, 16.01 percent higher from that in April.

He said the flow of inward remittance in May was also 4.38 percent higher than that in the same month a year earlier.

The inflow remittances, one of the key sources of foreign exchange for the nation, from nearly 10 million Bangladeshis in the last 2015-16 financial year fell about 2.55 percent to 14.93 billion U.S. dollars, the BB data showed.
