BUJUMBURA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- A Burundian fisherman was Wednesday morning abducted by Rwandan soldiers at Ruhwa in Cibitoke on the Burundi-Rwanda border post, a Burundian police spokesman said Wednesday.
"The fisherman known as Jackson Ndayikengurukiye was abducted at about 07:30 in the morning. Rwandan soldiers shot five bullets from the Rwandan territory and two Burundian men who were doing fishing activities in the River Ruhwa got scared. One of them, Jackson Ndayikengurukiye, ran away on Rwanda's side and the other ran on Burundi's side," Burundian Police Spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said.
According to him, the Burundian fisherman who ran on the Rwandan side was captured and "abducted" by Rwandan soldiers.
Nkurikiye said authorities from both countries have started talks to bring back the Burundian national "alive", adding that gunshots had been heard Tuesday from the Rwandan territory around 21:30 by Burundian citizens living near the common border.
In recent months, over six Burundian nationals were killed by Rwandan soldiers after the Rwandan army accused them of illicitly entering the Rwandan territory from Burundi's Cibitoke and Kirundo provinces.
Relations between Burundi and Rwanda have deteriorated after Burundi accused Rwanda of hosting and supporting perpetrators of the May 13, 2015 coup plot against Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.
