MADRID, June 21 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) has won the Princess of Asturias Award of Concord, the Princess of Asturias Foundation revealed on Wednesday.

The Foundation said that the EU "represents a unique model of supranational political integration based on peaceful, progressive and free association of its members".

The jury highlighted the successful achievements of the EU such as the Franco-German reconciliation or the enlargement of the EU borders towards the east, pointing out the challenges the EU faces nowadays -- the end of the economic and social crisis and Brexit.

This year a total of 28 candidates, from 16 different countries, have been nominated for the award.

The Princess of Asturias Awards aimed at recognizing the technical, scientific, social, cultural and humanitarian work carried out by people, groups and institutions in the world. The prize includes 50,000 euros, a sculpture of Joan Miro, a diploma and an insignia.

This is the last of the eight Princess of Asturias awards to be announced this year. The awards will be given in October in Spain's northern city of Oviedo in a ceremony chaired by the King and Queen of Spain.
