SYDNEY, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Emerging entrepreneurs from China and Australia competed on Tuesday, showcasing their startup ideas at an event at the University of Technology, Sydney.

The competition, sponsored by the Beijing Overseas Talent Center and the Zhongguancun Development Group, brought together aspiring innovators from a multitude of fields to compete for a chance to travel to Beijing and further develop their ideas.

The event boosted the ties of China and Australia even further, according to the Economic and Commercial Counselor at the Consulate-General of China in Sydney Wang Hongbo.

"China and Australia are at a very important time to step up collaboration, both governments have committed to this further cooperation," Wang told Xinhua.

"China is in this transition, in terms of its economic development, from an export oriented industry, to a primarily domestic driven industry and also to an economy based on science and technology in order to be more sustainable and environmentally friendly," Wang said.

"Australia is of course in the process of transitioning from a resources based economy to an economy increasingly driven by services. So on the China side, we have strategies driven by technology and on the Australia side there is a similar national science and innovation agenda," she added.

Susan Calvert, acting deputy secretary at the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Industry said this event attracted "cutting edge" talent, and will create stronger ties between China and Australia.

"We (NSW) are keen to establish more and more connections with innovation technology, and to establish those linkages between Australia and China," Calvert said.

"China is NSW's largest trading partner, and our link in tourism, education, merchandise, and trade will continue to grow."

The six winning teams will travel to Beijing and head to the Zhongguancun Science Park to further develop their business ideas with further assistance provided by the organizers.
