VIENNA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Austria is at the start of a long heat wave, with temperatures expected to persistently stay above 30 degrees Celsius, the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) stated on Tuesday.
"We are at the beginning of a very long and intense heat wave, which is unusual for June," said ZAMG climatologist Alexander Orlik.
It is as yet uncertain whether the longest heat wave on record to have begun in June that occurred in 2012, will be surpassed. In that year, 14 consecutive days with temperatures over 30 degrees were recorded.
The institute said at present, no easing of temperatures is in sight, with heat and thunderstorms expected through to at least the middle of next week.
