SHIBERGHAN, Afghanistan, June 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 21 people, including 13 militants loyal to the Islamic State (IS) group, have been killed as the armed group stormed Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province on Monday, a local official said Tuesday.

Hundreds of IS militants, according to Darzab district Governor Baz Mohammad, attacked security checkpoints in Darzab district Monday afternoon to overrun the district headquarters and since then fierce fighting has been ongoing.

So far 13 IS fighters and eight local police personnel have been killed and 18 others, including 15 insurgents and three police, sustained injuries.

The police have also captured a fighter of the armed group as captive, the official asserted.
