BANGKOK, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Five government troops were killed and four others seriously injured in a blast in southern Thailand on Monday, police said.

The bomb, believed to have been planted by an unknown group of local insurgents, blew up and killed five non-commissioned soldiers and wounded four others on a road in Thung Yang Daeng district of Pattani province, about 1,055 km south of Bangkok.

Thai media Matichon said the number and identity of the attackers remain unknown.

Pattani, along with Yala and Narathiwat, is the three southernmost provinces of Thailand that are haunted by explosions and attacks.

The soldiers, attached to Task Force 25, were on their way to a mission when they were hit by the blast.

The suspected perpetrators are still at large, the police said.
