At least 25 killed, 16 injured in Portugal forest fires

LISBON, June 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 25 people have been killed and 16 others injured in forest fires in central Portugal, according to Portuguese Lusa News Agency on Sunday.

The fires broke out late Saturday night in Pedrogao Grande in the district of Leiria, some 150 km northeast of Lisbon, where some 600 firefighters with more than 470 vehicles are trying to put out the fires.

Among the victims, 16 died in their cars when the fires swept over a road between the towns of Figueiro dos Vinhos and Castanheira de Pera, and three others died from smoke inhalation in Figueiro dos Vinhos, said Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomes.

The number of casualties is likely to rise.
