VIENTIANE, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Three talented Lao male and three female tennis players will compete at the Regional Qualifying Event of the ITF Asian 12 & Under Team Championship to held in Thailand next month, according to Lao Tennis Federation on Friday.
The Southeast Asia tournament is one of five regional events scheduled across Asia from March to September this year with the finals being held in November. The events are being organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Asian Tennis Federation.
This will be the first time young Lao players in this age group have been given the opportunity to compete in such a major tournament featuring so many countries, the federation was quoted by Lao state-run media Vientiane Times as saying. The Lao team is scheduled to leave for Thailand on July 8.
Meanwhile, the Lao national men's tennis team competing at the upcoming 29th SEA Games in Malaysia this August will train at Chao Anouvong Tennis Club in Lao capital Vientiane at the end of this month.
"We will try to do our best and hopefully get a bronze medal at the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia," said Donedy Keodalasouk, a member of Lao men's national tennis team.
The Lao tennis team previously won a silver medal at the 7th SEA Games in Singapore back in 1973, but have been unsuccessful in their medal quest at the games for many years.
