KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Personnel of law enforcement agencies had busted a terror group in Afghanistan's city of Kunduz, capital of northern Kunduz province, spokesman of provincial government said on Friday.

"On specific intelligence inputs personnel of national intelligence agency busted a six-member terrorist group following a recent raid in the city," spokesman Nimatullah Timori told Xinhua.

The captives were involved in a series of attacks on security forces and conducting targeted killings and bomb blasts in the city, he added.

Explosive materials and a handful of weapons were also seized after the raid, he said.

The spokesman added that the timely arrest of the men foiled terror attacks and saved the city, some 250 km north of the national capital of Kabul, from expected tragedy.

The province, bordering Tajikistan, has been the scene of heavy clashes over the past couple of months as Taliban militants have been trying to take control of Kunduz city and surrounding districts.

Taliban militants have yet to make comments.
