BUCHAREST, June 15 (Xinhua) -- The Social Democrat Party (PSD) and Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) will submit to parliament on Monday a motion of censure against the government headed by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, ALDE chairman Calin Popescu Tariceanu announced Thursday.

"We have decided together with the PSD and I have discussed with my colleagues to validate the decision to submit a motion of censure next week, on Monday, to parliament," said Tariceanu, who is also the Senate speaker.

"In this way, we will end the political crisis that we desire shortened as much as possible," he said.

Romania's major ruling PSD decided earlier on Thursday to submit a censure motion to topple its own prime minister who refuses to resign, as required by the party leader.

The move set a historical precedent in the country that the parliament majority impeaches its own government.

The prime minister reiterated his position of not resigning even after his party late Wednesday withdrew political support for him.

Grindeanu's cabinet entered into office in January after the Social Democrats won more than 45 percent of the votes in the parliamentary elections in December 2016. Together with the ALDE, the ruling coalition has an outright majority of some 247 seats in the 464-member parliament.
