BUCHAREST, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Thursday urged the ruling coalition to urgently resolve the internal crisis to avoid possible political instability in the country, presidential spokesperson Madalina Dobrovolschi told a press conference.

According to her, the president received a letter signed by the two leaders of the two-party ruling coalition in which they announced having withdrawn political support for the incumbent government.

She stressed that none of the instances had yet occurred to terminate the term of office of the prime minister and the cabinet.

"The president is asking for an urgent resolution of the crisis inside the ruling coalition so that political instability may be avoided," Dobrovolschi said.

"Resolving the internal crisis of the ruling collation is exclusively the responsibility of the parties making it up," she said.

The major ruling Social Democratic Party announced late Wednesday that it would withdraw its political support from Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, who has had tense relations with the party's main leaders recently and refused to take the initiative to resign.

Grindeanu reiterated his position of not resigning even after extreme measures taken by his party against him.

Under the Romanian constitution, the only feasible means to make the prime minister to step down is a vote of no-confidence in parliament.

Yet, the move would become a historical precedent that the parliament majority impeaches its own government.
