Malaysian ace Lee marches ahead after trashing Indonesian badminton star

JAKARTA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia advanced in the international badminton Indonesia Open super series tournament, trashing his Indonesian contender Tommy Sugiarto 13-21, 21-10, 21-18 here on Wednesday.

The Malaysian No. 1 seed beat Tommy in more than one hour.

"Chong Wei's profound experience as a champion is undeniable, he can play his match very cool to achieve victory at the end," Tommy said of his Malaysian contender on the sidelines of his match held in Jakarta Convention Center here.

Their latest meet here made the two players vied 15 times in various tournaments of which Tommy never won any of them.

Lee Chong Wei is aiming his seventh championship in Indonesian Open super series after the triumph in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2016.

Should he prevail to win the tournament this year, he would be the first foreign MS player to win more victory records than domestic players.

Indonesian players' best records to win in the tournament were six times, obtained by Ardy B. Wiranata and Taufik Hidayat.

Lee Chong Wei's toughest contender to win in the tournament is No. 8 men's singles player from China, Chen Long, who won Rio Olympic gold medal. The two equally shared 13 wins in their 26 meets.

Chen Long won his qualifying match against German player Marc Zwiebler 21-14, 21-14.
