SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Two policemen were wounded after militants barged inside house of a retired high court judge in Indian-controlled Kashmir and snatched four rifles from the policemen deployed there, police said Wednesday.

The attack took place at Anchidoora-Anantnag, about 55 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Late last evening militants in Anantnag town attacked policemen guarding the house of a retired high court judge and snatched their service rifles," a police official posted in the town told Xinhua, adding "two policemen were wounded in the militant assault during the stand-off."

Reports said the retired judge and his family were not present at the house at the time of attack.

The police official said militants in the region have been targeting policemen guarding houses of politicians and other protected people to snatch rifles, in wake of a weapons shortage within the militant ranks.

Last month, militants stormed a police post guarding court complex in adjacent Shopian district and snatched five rifles belonging to policemen deployed there.

Meanwhile, Tuesday night witnessed a multiple grenade attacks and firings on police posts in Pulwama, Tral and Sopore.

The past three days have seen a surge in grenade attacks in the region wounding police and paramilitary personnel.

Earlier this month, two army troopers were killed and four others wounded after militants attacked their convoy in the region.
