BERLIN, June 12 (Xinhua) -- The Federal Office of Statistics reported on Monday that the number of overnight stays by foreign and domestic tourists in Germany had risen by 13 percent to 37.1 million in April compared to last year.

The surge made up for a weak performance of the tourism industry in March, and was boosted by this year's late timing of Easter.

The Federal Office for Statistics puts the total number of overnight stays for the first four months of 2017 at 117.8 million, marking a year on year increase of three percent.

The number of overnight stays by domestic tourists rose by 15 percent to 30.5 million in April, compared to 6.6 million overnight stays by foreign guests which equaled growth of five percent.

The statistics apply to tourist accommodations which can host at least ten guests.
