JUBA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan's State-run National Oil and Gas company, Nilepet has introduced new system of coupons for refueling vehicles, motorcycles and generators at selected stations across the capital, Juba amid chronic fuel shortage .

According to a public announcement published in several local newspapers on Sunday, the new system took effect from June 9.

The new measures limits state-owned public transport buses to receive 100 liters per week, Minibuses will be given 80 liters and all motorcycle taxis, locally known as Boda-Boda get 30 liters per week for town service.

Buses engaged in cross border journeys get 80 liters and passenger vehicles traveling to hard-reach regions will get 400 liters.

Water tankers were granted 140 liters per week, farmers will receive 149 liters a week, and generators for home use will get 40 liters weekly.

South Sudan has been battling severe fuel shortage since 2014 as a result of civil war, economic crisis and shortage of hard currency to support imports.

The oil- rich East African nation relies on its neighbors-mainly Kenya and Uganda for much of the fuel supplies, but recent increase in road ambushes and looting has scared away oil distribution companies.

Long queues of vehicles and motorcycles in fuel stations could still be seen around the city despite introduction of the new system.
