One killed in southern Thailand's gun attack

BANGKOK, June 11 (Xinhua) -- A man was killed in a gun attack in southern Thailand, local media reported on Sunday.

The attack happened on Sunday night in Pattani province when the man, aged 30, was traveling on a motorbike with his friend. Two murders riding motorbikes run close after them and shot them, police said.

The man died on the spot after he got shot on his body and leg. His friend was seriously wounded after being shot for three times, according to a report from Manager Online.

The gun attack took place in front of a mosque near a highway, said police who are investigating whether the killing was related to illegal business conflicts or insurgency in the deep south.

Pattani is a Muslim-majority province in southernmost Thailand. The region's separatist violence dating back in 2004, has killed thousands. Gun shots, bomb attacks and arsons are often seen in the region.
