Red alert for rainstorm in China's Nanjing City

NANJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, on Saturday upgraded its "heavy rain" alert to red, the highest in China's four-tier weather warning system.

Storms are expected in the next six hours after precipitation had exceeded 100 mm in some parts of the city by 11 a.m. Saturday, said the city's meteorological bureau.

Five reservoirs in the city were inundated as of 9 a.m. Saturday, four of which are in Lishui District, according to the city's water bureau.

Jiangsu provincial weather station issued an orange alert for rain at 4:03 p.m., forecasting further rain in cities of Yangzhou, Taizhou and Nantong. An emergency response was initiated at 8 p.m. Friday.

China has a four-tier color-coded warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
