SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Life across Muslim majority areas of restive Indian-controlled Kashmir including the capital city Srinagar Friday remained paralysed due to restrictions by authorities and shutdown called by separatists, officials said.

Authorities fearing clashes have deployed hundreds of India's paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and policemen in full-riot gears across towns to impose strict restrictions and disallow protest demonstrations. These men have blocked roads by placing barricades and coils of concertina wire to impede free movement of people and vehicles.

The restrictions were imposed in areas falling under police stations Nowhatta, Rainawari, Khanyar, M R Gunj, Kralkhud, Maisuma and Safa Kadal in Srinagar.

Contingents of police and paramilitary were deployed in Anantnag, Pulwama, Sopore and some other towns, reports said.

The separatist groups had called for general shutdown and protests against the killing of Adil Farooq Magrey, a teenager killed during cordon operation in southern Shopian district on Tuesday evening.

Locals blamed troops for his killing.

Police said the locals hurled stones at government forces while they were trying to zero in on militants in the village.

All educational institutions in the region were close down to prevent student protests. In wake of the strike and restrictions, shops and businesses remained shut. Public transport was also off the roads and train services in the region were suspended.

Mobile internet services in the region have been blocked since Tuesday night.

Reports of protests and clashes poured in from Bandipora, Anantnag, Sopore and Shopian.

Anti-India sentiment runs deep in the psyche of majority of Kashmiris. Irate residents defying restrictions clashed with police. The youth throw stones and brickbats on contingents of police and paramilitary, who respond by firing tear smoke shells, pellets and bullets, which often proves fatal.

A separatist movement and guerilla war challenging New Delhi's rule is going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
