VIENTIANE, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The Lao Football Federation (LFF) is currently conducting a selection trial to seek its best young footballers to compete at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U18 Championship 2017 to be held in Myanmar in September.

The selection trial is being held at the LFF football field at Huayhong village in Chanthabouly district in Lao capital of Vientiane from June 5-11, the LFF was quoted as saying by the state-run daily Vientiane Times on Friday.

More than 100 young footballers from clubs in Vientiane along with Savannakhet, Khammuan, Huaphan, Champassak and Vientiane provinces have attended the trial. This year the federation has made a concerted effort to ensure that talented youngsters from as many provinces as possible are able to join the event.

Head Coach of Lao U18 team Ubeydullah Yavus said he expects to select 70 of his most talented footballers for further training ahead of the championship.

On June 11, the LFF will whittle down the squad to 35 players, then in August the best 23 footballers will be selected for the final national squad for the AFF U18 Championship 2017 in Myanmar from September 4-17.

The AFF U18 Championship 2017 competition features two groups, with Group A comprising Thailand, Timor Leste, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia and Laos while Group B includes Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines and New Zealand.

After returning from the AFF U18 Championship in Myanmar, the LFF plans to prepare players for the U19 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) qualifying round set for November this year.
