ANKARA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police seized over a ton of heroin aboard a ship during an anti-drug operation last week, reported the state-run Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.

The coast guard launched the operation on June 2 after they received information of a large-scale drug trafficking deal in the Mediterranean heading to Turkey.

The navy officers arrested nine Turkish nationals aboard a vessel, carrying a Congolese flag, off the Marmaris district of Mugla's western province, according to police officials.

The police captured 1,071 kgs of heroin hidden in dozens of sacks in the vessel's compartments.

This operation in international waters is the largest single heroin haul so far, stated the report.
