SEOUL, June 7 (Xinhua) -- German luxury automobiles kept dominating the South Korean imported car market in May amid stiffer competition of German automakers, industry data showed Wednesday.

The competition was fierce in the South Korean market between Mercedes Benz and BMW of Germany, according to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA).

BMW sold 5,373 vehicles in May, surpassing the sales of 5,063 cars recorded by Mercedes Benz, the KAIDA data showed.

In terms of domestic car sales, Mercedes Benz ranked first in the first three months of this year, but BMW topped its archrival BMW in April and May.

During the January-May period, Mercedes Benz sold 29,940 vehicles, bigger than BMW's sales of 23,488 units in the same period.

The third place came to the Japanese carmaker Honda who sold 1,169 vehicles here last month. It was followed by U.S. automaker Ford with 1,023 units.

Imported car sales totaled 19,380 units in May, down 0.5 percent from a year earlier. Compared with the previous month, the figure fell 3.3 percent.
