RIO DE JANEIRO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's top electoral court was set to resume a trial late Tuesday to determine whether the outcome of the past presidential race, in 2014, was valid.

Should the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) rule to annul the results of that election, it would strip President Michel Temer of office, though many observers agree that it is not likely to happen.

Dilma Rousseff and her then running mate Temer came to power in 2014. Rousseff was impeached in August 2016, leaving her vice president to see through the rest of her term.

In the wake of recent revelations of corruption, the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) -- whose presidential candidate lost to Rousseff -- alleged the Rousseff-Temer ticket received illegal campaign funding and filed a suit.

The courts' decision could nullify the results of the election, stripping a Brazilian president of office for the second time in less than a year.
