KATHMANDU, June 6 (Xinhua) -- President of the Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected as the 40th prime minister of Nepal on Tuesday.
Deuba was elected as the head of the government of Nepal through parliament voting.
"I announce that respected member Sher Bahadur Deuba has been elected to the post of Nepal's prime minister," House Speaker Onsari Gharti told the Parliament to loud cheers.
Deuba, 70, secured 388 votes to become the prime minister when 558 parliamentarians cast ballots in the prime minister election. 170 parliamentarians voted against him. Deuba was the sole candidate in the election.
The veteran leader will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari at her official residence Sheetalnibas on Wednesday.
The election came after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal resigned from the post on May 24.
Deuba was elected chairman of the Nepali Congress party through Nepali Congress General Convention in 2016.
