KATHMANDU, June 6 (Xinhua) -- President of the Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected as the 40th prime minister of Nepal on Tuesday.
Deuba was elected as the head of the government of Nepal through parliament voting.
"I announce that respected member Sher Bahadur Deuba has been elected to the post of Nepal's prime minister," House Speaker Onsari Gharti told the Parliament to loud cheers.
Deuba, 70, secured 388 votes to become the prime minister when 558 parliamentarians cast ballots in the prime minister election. 170 parliamentarians voted against him. Deuba was the sole candidate in the elections
Deuba secured majority votes as he was supported primarily by the third largest party in the parliament, CPN (Maoist Centre) and some other small parties.
The veteran leader will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari at her official residence Sheetalnibas on Wednesday.
