MANDERA, Kenya, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Unknown gunmen on Tuesday shot dead one person and injured another in Mandera country near the Somalia border.

Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said the shooting from unknown assailants happened along Mandera El Wak road at about 8 am where the woman died instantly.

The attackers targeted the vehicle belonging to a local political aspirant Mohamed Abdi who was not in the convoy of the two cars headed to El Wak town.

Barey Mohamed Abdi was shot on the abdomen and is nursing serious bullet injuries at the county referral hospital.

Shisia said the attackers had a specific target as they let the first vehicle to pass as they sprayed bullets on the second one from a close range.

Area security agents have launched investigations in the latest incident which comes amid a surge in roadside terror attacks in the restive country.

Shisia said Banisa, Mandera North and Mandera East sub counties have been classified as political hotspot areas.

The government administrator said the government has put up stringent measures to curb electoral violence in the hotspot areas and the entire county.

In the recent past, there have been numerous attacks involving landmines, grenades, or other explosive devices in northeast Kenya.

Most of these attacks occurred in northeastern Kenya, mainly in Dadaab, Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera counties as well as along the Kenyan coast.
