LUSAKA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Zambia is set to become a net exporter of fish and fish products within the next two years following massive investments in fish farming, a senior official said on Monday.

Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Michael Katambo said investments meant to boost fish farming will begin to bear fruits in the next two years as a lot of work was currently underway to boost production.

The government, he said, has acquired a 50-million-U.S.-dollar loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) aimed at making fish farming a viable business that was expected to boost fish stock.

The funds have been used to open up aquaculture development centers in all the country's 10 provinces, he added.

The Zambian minister, who was speaking after touring some industries involved in fish farming in Lusaka, the country's capital, said the country currently has a fish deficit of 16,000 tonnes.
