ROME, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Italian officials expressed outrage and solidarity with Britain on Sunday in the wake of Saturday night's attack in London in which seven people were killed and 48 were wounded.

British police shot and killed three assailants after they plowed a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, then got out of the vehicle and went on a killing spree armed with knives around 10 p.m. local time.

"London under attack again," Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni tweeted. "Solidarity with the British government and common commitment against terrorism. We unite in memory of the victims."

"Terrorism has once again shown its vilest face, brutally striking the capital of the United Kingdom," Italian President Sergio Mattarella said in a statement.

"Last night's attacks inspire not only our grief but also our profound outrage and firmest condemnation. Italy will always stand at the side of the United Kingdom in the battle against those who would undermine civil cohabitation in our open and inclusive societies."

Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti has called an emergency meeting of counter-terrorism and security services.

Speaking from London, where some 300,000 Italian nationals live, Italian Ambassador Pasquale Terracciano told RAI public broadcaster that two Italians appear to be missing and the embassy is doing all it can to track them down.
