RIYADH, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The house of former Saudi municipal councilor in east of the country was arson attacked on Saturday, Al Hayat local newspaper reported on Sunday.

Nabih Al Ibrahim is also the engineer, who is handling a development project in Al Awamiyah to replace deserted houses taken as hideouts by fugitives who are wanted for violence-related cases in Qatif region.

The news report confirmed that no one was hurt at the fire, while the police have launched an investigation.

The councilor sustained gun wounds in the back and leg in March, when his car was intercepted by a group of masked man in Al Awamiyah.

He was targeted when he was assigned by the government to negotiate with the residents to demolish the houses in order to build the project.

Al Ibrahim wasn't the only one that was targeted. A child and a man died and 10 injured in random shooting near the project's site in May.

Qatif is one of few disturbed Saudi areas that are populated with minority Saudi Shiite community. Some of its youth are demanding more rights in the Sunni conservative country.
