Korean Peninsula nuclear issue rooted in U.S.-DPRK strategic suspicions: senior Chinese military official

SINGAPORE, June 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese military official said here on Saturday that the root cause of nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula is the mutual strategic suspicions between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.

Lieutenant General He Lei, vice president of the Academy of Military Science of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, told reporters that China is making active efforts on the issue which also involves China's interests, adding that China will continue to work with other regional countries to resolve the issue.

He Lei said that China will continue to follow its three principles on the issue, namely sticking to realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, sticking to upholding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and sticking to peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations.

He led the Chinese delegation at the 16th Shangri-La Dialogue which opened here on Friday evening.

At the three-day dialogue organized by the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, senior military officials, diplomats and experts are discussing such topics as nuclear issues, security cooperation and measures to avoid conflicts.
