DAMASCUS, June 2 (Xinhua) -- U.S.-led airstrikes targeted several residential areas in Syria's northern city of Raqqa on Friday, destroying a hospital and leaving causalities, state-run Alikhbaria TV reported.

The coalition airstrikes targeted residential neighborhoods in the city of Raqqa, destroyed the Muwasat hospital and also hit the Karnak hotel in the city, said the report.

Still, no clear number of causalities emerged yet, although the falling of civilian victims was confirmed.

The rate of civilian causalities by U.S.-led airstrikes has increased recently as a result of the intensification of U.S. airstrikes on Raqqa, the de facto capital of the Islamic State (IS) group, and other IS strongholds in northern and eastern Syria.

On Sunday, 20 civilians were killed by the U.S.-led airstrikes in Raqqa.

Last Thursday, 35 civilians were killed by similar U.S. strikes on IS-held city of Mayadeen in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour.

The Syrian government repeatedly denounced the attacks that target civilians, branding the operation of the U.S.-led anti-terror coalition in Syria as "illegitimate."
