ADDIS ABABA, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) has already deployed its observation mission for Lesotho elections scheduled to take place on June 3, 2017.
Upon the invitation of the Independent Election Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the AU Commission, has deployed the AU election observation mission (AUEOM) to observe the National Assembly Elections in the Kingdom of Lesotho, according to a statement from the pan-African bloc.
Led by Joaquim Chissano, former President of Mozambique, the AUEOM comprises 26 observers drawn from members of the Permanent Representatives Committee of AU, Pan African Parliament (PAP), Election Management Bodies and civil society organizations.
The AUEOM, which is deployed in Lesotho from May 28 to June 8, has joined the AU election expert mission which has been in the country since May 13.
The AUEOM makes an independent, objective and impartial assessment of the elections, and offers recommendations for improvement of future elections that will contribute to the consolidation of democratic governance, peace and stability in the country.
The AUEOM will release its preliminary findings of the electoral process on June 5 at a press conference in Maseru.
And a more detailed final report on the process will be produced within three months and shared with the Lesotho authorities and institutions, according to the statement.
